Kurdish fighters quickly overwhelm an Islamic State position near Al-Tabqah. When two of the fighters attempt to surrender, the Kurds sense foul play. Instead of being fooled, they make the very wise decision to take no prisoners. They eliminate both fighters on the spot, and their suicide vests detonate as a result. By now, the common tactics, techniques, and procedures of the Islamic State have been figured out. It is not an uncommon occurrence for a majority of Islamic State fighters to be wearing suicide belts or vests. It is also not an uncommon occurrence for them to surrender, only to detonate themselves within the group of troops who move to detain them. We also have seen them feign injury, only to lay in wait for advancing troops so they can use themselves as an improvised explosive device.
These things are common place in the fight against the Islamic State, so that’s why the Kurds take no chances. When they absolutely dominate an Islamic State position, and overwhelm them to the point of brutally close combat, the weakened Islamic State fighters instantly fold. They know that there is no way they can win the firefight, let alone retain control of their current position so they attempt the suicide bombing tactic. In their minds, if they pretend to surrender they can get close enough to the Kurds to detonate themselves, and possibly sway the tide of the battle for their extremists friends.
The Kurds however, aren’t playing this game again. They are used to the tactics of the Islamic State. They make a snap decision, and instead of accepting the surrendering fighters and taking them as captives, they lay into them with all of their available weapon systems. As they pour fire onto the two Daesh fighters, both of them detonate their suicide vests well outside of the effective range of the small amount of explosives that they are wearing. As a result, not a single Kurdish fighter is injured in the exchange, and they are able to continue their unrelenting assault towards the Islamic State positions.
You can only use the same trick so many times before your enemy has you figured out. We saw this first with the Japanese soldiers during World War Two, who often manually booby trapped themselves in order to inflict casualties against their enemies. After a few dozen incidents of this happening, the tactic was figured out and easily circumvented. This is the exact same tactic being played on repeat, and the people currently engaging the Islamic State on the battlefield are no longer falling for it. They have also probably realized that their is no tactical value in capturing Islamic State fighters anymore. The only intelligence that they could possibly muster is confirmation that the entire organization is failing and is on its last legs.
